On Monday April 21, the Vatican confirmed the Holy Father died peacefully at his residence within Vatican City. He was 88 years old.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his life’s journey led him from humble beginnings to the highest office in the Roman Catholic Church. His dedication to serving the marginalized and his deep-rooted faith defined his path. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1969. His early ministry in Argentina was marked by his work in impoverished communities, a testament to his lifelong commitment to social justice. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and a cardinal in 2001.
In March 2013, the world witnessed the historic election of Cardinal Bergoglio as Pope, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He chose the name Francis, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, symbolizing a papacy dedicated to poverty, humility, and care for creation.
For twelve years, Pope Francis served as the leader of the world’s Catholics, championing the cause of the poor and refugees, and advocating for a more inclusive and merciful Church. He initiated significant reforms within the Vatican bureaucracy, striving for greater transparency and accountability. His voice resonated on global issues such as climate change and social inequality, earning him respect from leaders and individuals worldwide.
His efforts to build bridges with other Christian denominations and other religions fostered a spirit of ecumenical dialogue and interfaith understanding. Pope Francis’s warm and approachable demeanor broke down barriers, making him a beloved figure to many, regardless of their religious beliefs.
Today, Saturday, April 26th, the funeral for Pope Francis took place in St. Peter’s Square, followed by his burial in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a departure from the recent tradition of papal interments within the Vatican. The College of Cardinals will now convene to begin the process of electing his successor, a period of significant reflection and transition for the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis’s legacy will be remembered for his profound compassion, his commitment to reform, and his unwavering dedication to serving humanity. His voice, so often raised on behalf of the voiceless, will be deeply missed.
